Meet René Wellen
Projectleader & English Teacher at Supreme College Nederland

Having started as a teacher at the age of 22, I have a long history in education by now. I remember so well that my oldest student at the time was 21! One or two schools later I had the opportunity to set up bilingual vwo at Werenfridus in Hoorn. What I noticed there was that the students in the upper forms make so much progress, not only in English but especially in academic thinking skills and an international outlook on life itself.

After the graduation of the first group of students I decided to leave the school and move to Castricum, to Jac. P. Thijsse College (JPT). In no time we decided to start with bilingual education there as well, this time for all three departments not just vwo. And again, the same phenomenon: students developing very quickly in the last two years of the programme. I was fortunate enough to be able to teach them IB Language & Literature and I realized that it was the IB programme and the IB approach to teaching and learning that made all the difference.

I realized that it was the IB programme and the IB approach to teaching and learning that made all the difference.

Since then, now as vice-principal of JPT, I have been looking for ways to start the process of development much earlier in the students’ career, preferably in year two or three of vwo. However, within the existing structure of the school this proved to be impossible. That is the moment when the management of JPT and Bonhoeffercollege joined forces. Together we initiated Supreme College Nederland with its unique features of morning and afternoon sessions, the combination of MYP and vwo and the lively mix of international and Dutch students.

It is immensely stimulating to have the opportunity to collaborate with an excellent group of inspired, enthusiastic and creative teachers from JPT and Bonhoeffer and organise the education that the modern student deserves.
